The mission of the Center for Humane Studies is to contribute to the development of the cutting-edge field of Humane Studies linking social justice, environmental conservation, and animal protection through infusing the Franciscan Intellectual Tradition, Felician Core Value of Transformation, and Madonna University’s focus on education for service. As a Madonna student, you will be able to participate in and create various projects to benefit people and animals in need, as well as to protect the environment.

Current Projects

Past Projects

Celebrating the 5th anniversary of the papal encyclical devoted to care for creation, Laudato Si.

Aided by a grant award from the Catholic Climate Covenant, the Center for Humane Studies led Madonna Community in celebrations of Laudato Si. The events and activities included and expert lecture on climate change, display of student-created posters and ceramic art work celebrating endangered animal and plant species, an Earth Day Mass, as well as planting trees and native plants on campus.

Partnership with All Saints Soup Kitchen

In the past, our Center built a partnership with All Saints Soup Kitchen and Pantry located in Detroit’s Mexicantown. As a result, in collaboration with Madonna University Office of Service-Learning and Civic Engagement, we organized a group of volunteers to build two raised-bed urban gardens on the grounds of All Saints Parish, which then was being maintained by one of our student employees and parish members. The garden crops went directly to All Saints Soup Kitchen and Pantry.

Building the garden was a lot of fun, please see the video below.
